Lilla Mabel Merritt Obituary (1923 - 2022)

Lilla "Mabel" Lackey Merritt passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 23, 2022, at Oak Forest Rehabilitation Center. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm., Wednesday, April 27, at Peters Creek Baptist Church, Lawsonville, N.C., with Reverend Terry Ragsdale officiating. Interment will follow at the church cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Mabel was born April 20, 1923, to the late Edward and Bessie Lackey in Lawsonville. She lived a full life working with her family on the farm and was a devoted homemaker and avid cook. She especially enjoyed growing her vegetable garden and tending to her flowers. She was a lifelong member of Peters Creek Baptist Church and was a great friend to all who knew her. She was preceded in death by her husband Benjamin "Frank" Merritt of 65 years; son James Edward Merritt and three siblings; Marvin Lackey, Margaret Wall, and Jerry Lackey. She is survived by her daughter Charlotte Speas of Winston-Salem and daughter-in-law Patricia Merritt of Walkertown. She leaves a grandson Christian Speas (Michelle) of Lewisville; a granddaughter Amy McPeak (Todd) of Germanton; two step grandchildren, Sheila (James) Hester of Belews Creek and Jeff (Janice) Hunter of Kernersville; four great-grandchildren, Tanner (Lexi) McPeak and Sloane McPeak and Davis and John Speas; three step great grandchildren Jamie Griffith (James), Meagan (Zack) Stone; Michael Hunter and one step great great grandchild, Abigail Griffith, and a very special niece Kaye (Tim) Yokely, and daughter Meredith. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Peters Creek Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, 6561 NC 8 Highway North, Lawsonville, NC 27022.
