James Larry McDowell, Sr. Obituary (1950 - 2020)

MADISON- James Larry McDowell, Sr., 70, died on Sunday, August 30, 2020 at Hospice of Rockingham County. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, September 3, 2020 at Colonial Funeral Home. The family will receive friends beginning at 1 p.m., Thursday at the funeral home. Mr. McDowell was born on January 30, 1950 in Surry County to the late James Eugene McDowell and Opal Elaine Roddy McDowell. He worked for Sears for 22 years and concluded his working career at Synergy Recycling in Madison. He had a strong worth ethic and treated everyone with respect. Traveling to flea markets with his son, Jimmy, spending time with his beloved family and socializing with friends were some of his most favorite things to do. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his step-father, Grover Parker. Survivors include his wife, Bonnie Godfrey; sons, James "Jimmy" McDowell, Jr. (Brooke), Scottie McDowell (Stephanie) and Justin Godfrey (Sandy); grandchildren, Michael Godfrey, Robert Von Scheven and Parker McDowell; brothers, Thomas Gary McDowell (Judy), William "Bill" Wayne McDowell (Robin) and Barry "Spook" McDowell; dearest friends, Gary and Debbie Vogt, Reavis and Paula Hendron and Audrey and Mickey Bullock and numerous nieces, nephews and countless friends.
