WALNUT COVE - Gilmer Garfield Southern Jr, 78, passed away, Tuesday, March 30, 2021, at his home. Gilmer was born June 2, 1942 in Chapel Hill, NC to the late Gilmer Garfield and Lillian Smith Southern. He was a US Air Force Veteran, a member of Bethel Baptist Church, and was a former employee of the Winston Salem Forsyth County Schools. Survivors include his wife, Odessa Ayers Southern; son, Gilmer Garfield Southern III (Cookie); daughters, Rebecca Ann Cashion (Brian) and Clara Beatrice Southern; step-son, Stanley Barton (Tasha); step-daughters, Kimberly Barton and Susan Harris (Ricky); grandchildren, Amber and Brandon Layman, Justin Cashion, Derrick, Isiah, and Jacob Southern, Hailey, Kristen and Joshua O'Neal, and Chase Barton.
