Elzia "Elka" Wood Cheshire Obituary (1932 - 2021)

Mt Airy - Elzia "Elka" Wood Cheshire, 89, passed away, Sunday, May 23, 2021, at Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson. The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, May 26, 2021, at Delta United Methodist Church. Interment will follow in Northview Primitive Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, May 25, at Colonial Funeral Home Stokes Chapel. Mrs. Cheshire was born February 19, 1932, in Stokes County, to the late James Mahlon and Ressie Elaine Shelton Wood. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Dobson and the VA Women of Faith. She was the founder of Stone Croft Missionary Ministry and had a TV ministry "Talk Time With Elka" which led a lot of people to Christ. She was a wonderful mother, friend, and provider who loved good cooking and also camping at "The Homeplace". In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John Ray Cheshire, Jr; brother, James Marshall Wood; sisters, Peggy Ann Wood and Orene Ressie Joyce; and niece; Amy Jean Holcomb. Survivors include her sons, Michael Darrell Dodson Winfree (Deborah Bingman) and Marcus Kyle Winfree; daughters, Peggy Michelle Yauch (Glenn Marshall) and Jill Millette Wall (Clay Wall); grandchildren, David, Kelly, Michael Cole, Dustin, and Derek Winfree, Lindsay Yauch, Ryan Johnson, Corey Dalton, and Caleb Shelton; great-grandchildren, Addelyn and Maddox Winfree, Mackenzy, Liam, and Maverick Johnson; a sister, Shelby Jean Joyce (Bobby Lee); special niece, Judy Taylor Davenport; nephews, Vincent Joyce, Dennis Joyce, David Joyce, and Anthony Wood; nieces, Wanda Wood and Debbie Burgess. Memorials may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice, 401 Technology Lane, Mt. Airy, NC 27030. Colonial Funeral Home Stokes Chapel in Sandy Ridge is serving the family.
